Thanks for the link to the podcast, Katie. It was enriching. And Jules, thanks for drawing my attention to Newman in your lectures several years back. I've been reading and rereading him. Presently I'm reading the "Apollogia" and Meriol Trevor's bio. As you both stress in the podcast the personal and human dimension of this great man is front and center.Here's an anecdote that is so illustrative of his humanity and spiritual depth. His sister, Jemima, doubts that their relatives comment on N's cheerfulness was an accurate reading. Newman writes to her: "You must not suppose I put on cheerfulness because people do not find out I have cares; the truth is (thank God) I am cheerful...having sound sleep at night and quiet days and trying to serve Him without aims of this world, however imperfectly, how can I but be cheerful, as I am. And I trust He will overcome all painful things, which myself or others have to bear, to our good", (p.323)

Newman stresses that papal infallibility is the necessary antidote to intellectual suicide. In the face of 19th Century liberalism and contemporary relativism I think he is exactly right.
