Who or what cares?

Friend Justine links to this Fox news story about a college in Pennsylvania that has a vending machine where students can purchase "emergency contraception", the so-called Plan B or Morning After pill.
I was especially struck by this defense offered by one senior: "It's a way for students to get the help or care they need".
Help and care from a vending machine?!
You know what the real "message" of the machine to young women is? No one cares about you and what's happening in your life. No one wants to deal with any consequences. You're on your own.

I read this story today on the Associated Press. One often has trouble knowing whether to laugh or cry with these tales of perdition.
That same student you wuote mentions how nice it is that the machine dispenses birth control without forcing the students to go into town and buy it, which is "embarassing."
That's strange. What are they embarassed about?

Here was an interesting comment on another webstie discussing this issue:
"Just imagine that at the same time those decrepit old slobs in Congress and professional sports officials RAIL INCESSANTLY about athletes using PEDs (performance enhancement drugs, particularly artificial hormones) and claiming the poor example it sets for our children, we have “American” universities and society at large practically shoving artificial hormones down the throats of our daughters from the very start of puberty well into their twenties. Our daughters aretaking steroids to overstimulate their reproductive systems in order to render their reproductive capabilities non-functioning. All the while these “elite” stuff their faces with Viagra, Xanax, Prozac and the like - all considered performance enhancement drugs by anyone with some intellectual honesty."

BTW, I sent an email to the Dean of Students at Shippenburg University, voicing my objections, as a concerned citizen of PA with two college age daughters, to the presence of such a machine on campus.

I know you and I had a relatively sheltered, blessedly 'uneventful' time as undergraduate students at conservative institutions of high learning - but still, this shocks me
